Spotlight: Kerry Washington/Django Unchained

Blockbuster films are a dime a dozen these days and I admittedly don't see many of them. I will, however, always pay attention to their press tours because the female stars need to be outfitted in designer looks and I am very much into that. Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino's controversially epic slavery-era drama, came out on December 25th in America. Sadly and appropriately, though, the American premiere was canceled due to its proximity to the massacre in Newtown, CT.

The European leg of the tour kicked off last week and Django's female lead, Kerry Washington, has been KILLING IT with her looks. Kerry has crept up the style meter over the last few years and it's easy to see why. I have been Googling like a crazy person to find out who her stylist is, but I can't find it anywhere. I remember George Kotsiopoulos saying on Fashion Police that he's worked with her before, but I don't think this is his doing. Anyway, let's gush.

Rome Photo Call - Kerry's first stop was Rome and if her intention was to start off with a bang, she certainly accomplished it. This Spring 2013 Peter Pilotto dress is loud, crazy, ridiculous, and completely awesome. I wrote about Peter Pilotto's Spring collection here. Obviously it's not for everyone, but appreciate the art folks! Simple hair and simple shoes are all this needed. I love it.

Rome Premiere - After wearing the fashion equivalent of a blast siren to the Rome photo call, Kerry and her stylist ingeniously kept it simple for the premiere. Simple but sexy is the name of this Prada dress. The longer length is so smart with such a revealing cut out and the white is so perfect with her skin tone. And who doesn't love a green metallic clutch? Fair play for wearing an Italian designer in Italy too.

Paris Premiere - Sadly there was no photo call in Paris so we only got one look, but I think she made up for that with this gorgeous Rochas gown. The gown was shown in black on Rochas' Spring runway, but I'm so glad they chose a floral print. This is so beautiful. The updo was the smartest choice for her hair because it allows Kerry to show off her lovely shoulders. Perfection all around.

Berlin Photo Call - At first I thought the Peter Pilotto dress would be the most polarizing, but it might actually be this one. This is a look from Louis Vuitton's incredible Spring 2013 presentation. I love the dress, but I'm not crazy about the accessories. The hair bow I can live with, but I have a deep seeded hatred of white shoes. That said, though, I struggle to think of another shoe that could be paired with this dress. It calls for a very ladylike, plain shoe. I would have preferred the runway shoes because they're not white white. White and any sort of off white together tends to bug me. Anyway, the dress is fabulous and I'm so happy to see it off the runway!

Berlin Premiere - This is another stunning choice for Kerry. I love the '60s vibe of this J. Mendel dress and I can't fault her for going with another floral print since this is so pretty. The colors are magic with her skin and I adore the pink lip. It was easy for her to keep the same hair from the photo call since both outfits are inspired by the same decade. I would have liked a little bit more of a bouffant, but it's not a deal breaker. Hit and score!

London Premiere - Saving the best for last is a cliche, but I think she may have done it here. The Django train came to a halt in London last night and Kerry completely blew me away in this Giles Deacon dress. She smartly wore a British designer, much as she did with Prada in Italy. The graphic on the skirt is a horse, which may be a little much, but I'm so in love with the shape that I don't care. Full skirts get me every time. The shoes peeking out are charming and in this instance I don't mind that they're white. The silver box clutch is a perfect compliment as are her dark lips and hair. This is a dream look!

Kerry's stylist should take a massive bow for this work. She didn't put so much as a toe wrong. Kerry will be presenting at this Sunday's Golden Globe Awards and since Django Unchained was announced as a Best Picture nominee at this year's Oscars yesterday morning, I sure hope this means she'll be attending that as well! I feel the need to know what she's wearing at all times now because I'm sure her grocery store outfits are just as great.

What do you think of Kerry's looks? Are you as excited for awards season as I am?

  1. The first and last dresses blow me away...they are both definitely risky, but sooooo beautiful! I agree that this stylist is a miracle!! Never boring, and not one "miss" in the bunch.
